Mexico Inflation Eases To 4.21%, Lowest Since Early 2021

(RTTNews) - Mexico's consumer price inflation eased more than expected in December to the lowest level in nearly four years, data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography, or INEGI, showed on Thursday.

The consumer price index climbed 4.21 percent year-on-year in December, slower than the 4.55 percent rise in November. Economists had forecast inflation to ease to 4.28 percent.

Further, this was the slowest inflation rate since February 2021. The inflation rate is now approaching close to the central bank's upper target range of 4.0 percent.

Meanwhile, core inflation rose to 3.65 percent in December from 3.58 percent a month ago.

Prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages alone grew 4.3 percent annually in December, but slower than the 6.0 percent spike in November.

Costs for culture and recreation also rose at a slower pace of 3.82 percent from last year versus 3.93 percent in November, while those for transportation climbed at a faster pace of 4.87 percent.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices moved up 0.38 percent in December after rising 0.44 percent in the prior month. Core consumer prices increased 0.5 percent.
