Malaysia's Industrial Output Recovers In July

(RTTNews) - Malaysia's industrial production returned to growth in July for the first time since February as restrictions to curb the spread of coronavirus were relaxed, data from the Department of Statistics showed Friday.

Industrial production grew 1.2 percent on a yearly basis in July, following a 0.4 percent drop in June.

The annual growth was driven by a 2.9 percent rise in manufacturing output. Meanwhile, mining and electricity output declined 3 percent and 5.1 percent, respectively.

On a monthly basis, industrial production grew 1.2 percent in July.

Another report from the statistical office showed that the unemployment rate as more sectors of the economy started to reopen after the lockdown.

The jobless rate fell to 4.7 percent in July from 4.9 percent in June. The number of people out of work fell by 28,200 to 745,100.

The number of employed persons increased 0.6 percent on month after registering a 0.7 percent rise in June. After three straight months of employment below 15 million, the number went up to 15.07 million in July.
