India Wholesale Price Inflation Rises To 2.37%

01/14/2025 - 03:30:00 (RTTNews)

(RTTNews) - India's wholesale price inflation accelerated in December to the highest level in six months, provisional data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry revealed on Tuesday.

The wholesale price index, or WPI, rose 2.37 percent year-over-year in December, faster than the 1.89 percent increase in September. Economists had expected inflation to rise to 2.30 percent.

Prices for primary articles grew at a faster pace of 6.02 percent in December versus a 5.49 percent gain in the prior month. Similarly, the yearly price growth in the manufactured products accelerated to 2.14 percent from 2.00 percent.

Data showed that food price inflation remained elevated but eased slightly to 8.89 percent from 8.92 percent, while fuel and power costs declined at a slower pace of 3.79 percent versus 5.83 percent in November.

On a monthly basis, wholesale prices dropped 0.38 percent from November, when they decreased by 0.45 percent.

Data released on Monday showed that India's consumer price inflation softened to a 4-month low of 5.22 percent in December from 5.48 percent in November. Further, consumer price inflation continued to remain within the RBI's medium-term target of 2-6 percent.
