India Wholesale Price Inflation Eases To 14-month Low

(RTTNews) - India's wholesale price inflation eased further in May to the lowest level in more than a year amid cheaper costs for primary articles, fuel, and power, provisional data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry revealed on Monday.

The wholesale price index, or WPI, rose 0.39 percent year-over-year in May, slower than the 0.85 percent increase in April. Economists had expected inflation to ease slightly to 0.80 percent. Moreover, this was the lowest inflation rate since March 2024.

Food inflation moderated to 1.72 percent from 2.55 percent in April. Prices for primary articles declined 2.02 percent annually in May, and costs for fuel and power also showed a further decline of 2.27 percent.

Price increases softened in manufactured products too, from 2.62 percent to 2.04 percent.

On a monthly basis, wholesale prices edged down 0.06 percent from April, when they decreased by 0.39 percent.

Data released last week showed that India's consumer price inflation eased more-than- expected to 2.82 percent in May from 3.16 percent in April. Moreover, this was the lowest inflation rate since February 2019, when prices had risen 2.57 percent.
