Hong Kong Trade Deficit Narrows In September

10/28/2026 - 05:59:00 (RTTNews)

(RTTNews) - Hong Kong's foreign trade deficit decreased in September from a year ago as exports grew faster than imports, data from the Census and Statistics Department showed on Wednesday.

The trade shortfall narrowed to HK$46.3 billion in September from HK$50.2 billion in the same month last year. In August, the trade balance showed a deficit of HK$71.2 billion.

Exports grew 64.9 percent year-on-year in September, and imports grew 57.8 percent.

A visible trade deficit of HK$46.3 billion, equivalent to 5.7 percent of the value of imports of goods, was recorded in September 2026, the agency said.

The continued strong growth in exports was driven by sustained stellar performance in outflows of AI-related electronic products, marking the twentieth consecutive month of double-digit growth and the fastest monthly yearly growth in over four decades.

Exports to Mainland China climbed 68.1 percent compared with the previous year, and total shipments to Asia expanded 67.5 percent. Within the Asian region, exports to Taiwan grew the most at 159.3 percent, followed by Malaysia with a 131.5 percent increase.

Apart from destinations in Asia, shipments to the USA and Mexico grew by 133.4 percent and 148.1 percent, respectively.

Meanwhile, imports from Korea jumped by 231.1 percent, and those from Vietnam grew by 118.7 percent. The country imported 61.3 percent more from India.

"Looking ahead, Hong Kong's merchandise trade performance will continue to benefit from the prevailing wave of robust AI-related investment and the resilient global economic growth," a government spokesman said.

"Nonetheless, external uncertainties warrant close monitoring, including the Middle East conflict, trade protectionist measures by major economies, and risks associated with the rapid expansion of global investment in AI."
