Brazil FGV Consumer Confidence Improves In September

(RTTNews) - Confidence among Brazilian consumers strengthened in September to the highest level in nine months, a survey by the Getulio Vargas Foundation showed Wednesday.

The seasonally adjusted consumer confidence index rose to 87.5 in September from 86.2 in August. Further, this was the highest reading since December 2024, when it was 91.3.

Nonetheless, any score below 100 indicates a pessimistic outlook and once again signals a slow recovery from the losses incurred at the end of 2024.

The expectations index climbed by 3.7 percent to 91.8 in September, while the current situation index dropped by 2.5 points to 82.0.

Among the items of the expectations index, the future local economic situation indicator rose 6.9 points to 104.6, and the future household financial situation also improved by 4.1 points to 83.9.

"The continued strong labor market and the recent easing of inflation appear to have made consumers less pessimistic about the future, but high levels of household debt and default continue to limit a more robust improvement in confidence," Anna Carolina Gouveia, an economist at FGV IBRE, said.
