VENEZUELA: European Union Criticizes 'lack Of Transparency' On Election

04/19/2018 - 18:08:00 (RTTNews)

(RTTNews) - European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini criticized the way the elections were convened in Venezuela for May 20, without the participation of all political agents involved, and reiterated the importance of a free and transparent process.

"We deeply regret that the elections were convened without a broad agreement on the electoral calendar and the conditions for a credible and inclusive electoral process," she said in a statement. "We also regret the existence of political prisoners and the hurdles to limit the participation of political parties and candidates."

According to Mogherini, the demand made by the South American country's National Electoral Council (CNE), which provides that only parties that present presidential candidates can also take part in local and regional elections, is another blow to the credibility of the process and "should only exacerbate polarization and create more hurdles to a peaceful political solution."

The EU called on the government to ensure free and transparent elections, with the necessary technical guarantees to ensure that voting is in line with international standards. "The European Union is fully committed to supporting Venezuela in finding peaceful and democratic solutions," the statement said.

The elections were initially called for April 22, but the CNE postponed the date and announced an "electoral guarantee agreement," signed by supporters of President Nicolas Maduro and the opposition candidate Henri Falcon. However, the opposition coalition Democratic Unit Roundtable (MUD) refused to sign and stayed out of the election.
