U.S. Weekly Jobless Claims Edge Slightly Higher To 236,000

(RTTNews) - First-time claims for U.S. unemployment benefits edged slightly higher in the week ended August 26th, according to a report released by the Labor Department on Thursday.

The report said initial jobless claims inched up to 236,000, an increase of 1,000 from the previous week's revised level of 235,000.

Economists had expected jobless claims to rise to 237,000 from the 234,000 originally reported for the previous week.

Meanwhile, the Labor Department said the less volatile four-week moving average dipped to 236,750, a decrease of 1,250 from the previous week's revised average of 238,000.

The report said continuing claims, a reading on the number of people ongoing unemployment assistance, also fell by 12,000 to 1.942 million in the week ended August 19th.

The four-week moving average of continuing claims slid to 1,951,500, a decrease of 6,250 from the previous week's unrevised average of 1,957,750.

On Friday, the Labor Department is due to release its more closely watched monthly jobs report. The report is expected to show an increase of about 180,000 jobs in August.
