(RTTNews) - Portugal's headline inflation and its core figure accelerated in September, preliminary estimates from Statistics Portugal showed Friday.

The consumer price index rose 1.4 percent year-on-year following a 1.2 percent increase in August.

The CPI excluding fresh food and energy prices rose 0.8 percent from a year ago versus 0.6 percent in August.

Energy inflation eased to 7 percent from 7.4 percent and the price growth in fresh food dropped to 1.04 percent from 1.06 percent.

On a month-on-month basis, the CPI rose 1.1 percent after a 0.3 percent fall in the previous month.

The core CPI moved up 1.4 percent versus a 0.5 percent fall in August.

Inflation based on the harmonized index of consumer prices, or HICP, which is meant for EU comparison, climbed to 1.8 percent from 1.3 percent.

Compared to the previous month, the HICP rose 1.5 percent after a 0.7 percent fall.
