PERU: Vice President Arrives At Lima Before Possible Kuczynski Ouster

12/20/2017 - 18:01:00 (RTTNews)

(RTTNews) - Peru's vice president Martin Vizcarra arrived Wednesday in Lima in a flight from Canada, where he is the ambassador, in the midst of a political crisis that may end with the ouster of the President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.

Vizcarra would assume the presidency if Congress dismisses Kuczynski on Thursday for "moral incapacity" due to his ties to the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht, which is accused of corruption in several Latin American countries.

Odebrecht informed the Peruvian Congress that it transferred some US$ 4.8 million to consultancy companies linked to Kuczynski, including one of them when he was an official of the government of former president Alejandro Toledo, between 2001 and 2006.

In the last few weeks, lawmakers of the opposition Popular Force, which controls the Congress, and other parties have said that Kuczynski has not been able to demonstrate that he did not benefit from his relationship with Odebrecht and that they would support the presidential vacancy.
