PERU: Kuczynski Says He Will Remain In Office Despite Pressure From Congress

12/17/2017 - 16:35:00 (RTTNews)

(RTTNews) - Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski said he would not resign amid pressure from the Congress, controlled by the opposition, after the discovery of payments received from Brazilian construction company Odebrecht - which is being investigated for bribes in several Latin American countries.

In a message to the country, Kuczynski said he would not be intimidated and claimed to be an honest man.

"I am here to tell you that I will not abdicate to my honor, nor to my values, nor to my responsibilities as President of all Peruvians," he said.

He added that he is willing to "defend the truth before the Car Wash commission and before the prosecutor's office, to which I am going to request the lifting of my banking secrecy so that they review everything they want."

Members of the commission that investigates the Car Wash scandal in Peru have presented reports of the Odebrecht company that point to a total of US$ 4.8 million in payments to two firms linked to Kuczysnki.

One of the disbursements occurred when the Peruvian president was an official of the government of the former president Alejandro Toledo, between 2001 and 2006.

The president denied in his message the allegations of involvement in corruption actions, and stressed that the only payment he received that is related to Odebrecht is a financial advisory service that he provided to the company, legitimately according to him, while occupying no public office.

Prosecutors investigating Odebrecht corruption cases in Peru plan to meet with President Kuczynski on December 21.
