PERU: Congress Calls Up Prime Minister To Discuss Confidence Vote

09/14/2017 - 19:58:00 (RTTNews)

(RTTNews) - The Peruvian Prime Minister Fernando Zavala will appear before the opposition-controlled Congress to discuss his call for a confidence vote in the cabinet.

Zavala requested the vote yesterday, after accusing the parliamentary majority of censorship. He also said that the cabinet is undermining the educational reforms proposed by the government and forced the resignation of the Minister of Education, Marilú Martens.

Marilú Martens is being targeted due to her performance during a teachers strike that lasted for 45 days.

Should Congress refuse to support the cabinet, all ministers must resign, and the President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski would have to form a new government team.

According to Peru's Constitution, if Congress twice refuses to support an entire cabinet of ministers, the president is empowered to dissolve the Parliament and convene a legislative election.
