New Zealand Net Migration Climbs In April

05/19/2017 - 00:16:00 (RTTNews)

(RTTNews) - New Zealand's net migration increased in April from a year ago, driven by more migrant arrivals and fewer migrant departures, figures from Statistics New Zealand showed Friday.

In the year to April 30, the country recorded a net migration of 71,885, up from 68,110 in the same period of 2016. At the same time, it remained almost in line with the 71,932 in March 2017.

Migrant arrivals numbered 129,800 in April, a new annual record, while migrant departures were 57,900.

"Almost one in five migrant arrivals for the last 12 months were people coming to New Zealand to study," population statistics senior manager Peter Dolan said.

"Student arrivals from Asia dominated the overall student migrant arrivals, contributing almost three-quarters of the total."

Visitor arrivals to the country numbered 3.6 million, setting a new annual record in April, up 10.0 percent from last year.
