New Zealand Building Permits Climb 7.8% In August

(RTTNews) - The total number of building permits issued in New Zealand advanced a seasonally adjusted 7.8 percent on month in August, Statistics New Zealand said on Friday.

That follows the downwardly revised 10.8 percent contraction in July (originally -10.7 percent).

In August 2018, 3,075 new dwellings were consented, including 1,880 houses, 507 apartments, 497 townhouses, flats, and units and 191 retirement village units.

For stand-alone houses only, the seasonally adjusted number rose 0.2 percent, after a 6.2 percent fall in July, and 4.1 percent fall in June.

In the year ended August 2018, the actual number of new dwellings consented was 32,759, up 6.6 percent on year.

The numbers of new homes consented across New Zealand in the latest year were: a record 12,959 in Auckland - up 26 percent; 3,477 in Waikato - down 3.8 percent; 2,694 in Wellington - up 16 percent; 5,609 in Rest of North Island - down 6.3 percent; 4,624 in Canterbury - down 9.5 percent; and 3,395 in Rest of South Island - down 1.2 percent.

The annual value of non-residential building work consented was NZ$6.7 billion, up 5.4 percent on year.

In the August 2018 year, the non-residential building types with the highest values were: education buildings - NZ$1.1 billion; offices, administration, and public transport buildings - NZ$1.0 billion; and shops, restaurants, and bars - NZ$1.0 billion.

Also on Friday, the consumer confidence index from ANZ was flat on month, holding steady at 117.6.
