MOODY'S: Political Risk Poses Major Credit Challenge In Latin America

08/29/2017 - 16:54:00 (RTTNews)

(RTTNews) - Political risk across Latin America is a major challenge for issuers in the region, potentially posing a threat to economic growth, political reforms and financial conditions, Moody's said in a report.

According to the credit risk rating agency, countries with medium or high levels of susceptibility to political risk events include Venezuela and Argentina. Meanwhile, political risk is more moderate in Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, and Chile, in Moody's assessment.

"Heightened political risk raises investors' concerns about negative policy outcomes affecting market confidence," said Gersan Zurita, Moody's Senior Vice President. He added that "political-related uncertainty widens risk premiums, adversely affects equity and bond valuations and generates exchange rate volatility."

In Argentina, Moody's considers that October's legislative elections still have some risks, as they will determine whether the reforms promoted by the President Mauricio Macri aimed at combat inflation and stimulate sustained growth will be maintained.
