MEXICO: Country Responds To Trump's Statements On NAFTA And Border Wall

08/28/2017 - 17:34:00 (RTTNews)

(RTTNews) - Mexico will continue to be "serious and constructive" during the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), defending the national interest and seeking a result in which all three of the member-countries can win, said the Mexican Foreign Office in a statement.

Mexico also stated that it would not negotiate NAFTA or any other aspect of its bilateral ties with the United States through social networks or the media, in response to comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump on his Twitter account.

"We are in the process of renegotiating NAFTA (the worst deal ever signed) with Mexico and Canada, both of which are imposing hurdles," Trump complained on Twitter.

The first round of NAFTA negotiations lasted five days. The parties involved pledged to adopt quick procedures to update the agreement.

Trump also twitted regarding the construction of a wall on the U.S. border with its southern neighbor.

"Mexico is one of the most crime-ridden nations in the world. We must have the wall. Mexico will pay for it through a refund or otherwise," Trump tweeted.

In response to this, Mexico noted that "as the government has always maintained, Mexico will not pay, in any way nor under any circumstances, a wall or physical barrier built in U.S. territory along the border."
