Hong Kong Private Sector Continues To Contract

10/04/2018 - 01:07:00 (RTTNews)

(RTTNews) - Hong Kong's private sector continued to contract at the end of third quarter, reflecting sharper declines in both output and new orders amid rising trade frictions between the US and China, survey data from IHS Markit showed Thursday.

The Nikkei Purchasing Manager's Index fell to 47.9 in September from 48.5 in August. A score below 50 indicates contraction in the sector.

"The latest headline PMI is indicative of GDP growth running below a 2 percent annual rate in the third quarter," Bernard Aw, principal economist at IHS Markit, said.

The survey brought further signs of softening client demand. The pace of reduction in overall new orders was among the steepest seen in the past two years. Tepid demand conditions pushed firms to further cut back on output.

Deflationary pressures were also reported in both input and output prices. Finally, firms remained pessimistic about future output, with the ongoing US-China trade dispute emerging as a key concern.
