French Consumer Sentiment Weakens In September

(RTTNews) - France's consumer sentiment weakened unexpectedly in September, survey data from the statistical office Insee showed Wednesday.

The consumer confidence index fell to 101 in September from 103 in August. This was the third consecutive fall and marked the lowest since April, when the score was 100.

Households were less optimistic about their future financial situation and their view on past financial conditions worsened in September.

The index measuring future financial situation came in at -11 versus -9 in August and that for past financial situation fell to -22 from -18.

Households' opinion on the future standard of living in France deteriorated, with the indicator easing to -22 from -19. Meanwhile, their assessment of past standard of living was virtually stable, with reading at -41.

Households' fears concerning unemployment trend bounced back in September. The corresponding balance gained 12 points to 15 and returned to its level of April 2017.

Households have been more numerous than in August to expect prices to increase over the next twelve months. The indicator for past consumer prices held steady at -55 and that for next 12 months rose to -30 from -33 in August.
