COLOMBIA: Vice President Rejects Trump's Claims Regarding War On Drugs

09/14/2017 - 19:01:00 (RTTNews)

(RTTNews) - Colombian Vice President Óscar Naranjo deemed as 'inadmissible' the recent statements by U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatened to decertify Colombia as a partner in the war on drugs if it does not control its illicit crops.

Speaking to Caracol Radio, Naranjo stated that "we have 2,621 tons seized [of illegal crops], a proof of how unjust is an assertion like that."

He added that Colombian authorities arrested 1,020 drug dealers and sent more than 800 of them to the United States as extradited prisoners.

On Wednesday, Trump said in a memo to the Secretary of State that he "seriously considered designating Colombia as a country that has failed demonstrably to adhere to its obligations under international counter narcotics agreements."

According to the document, Colombia showed an "extraordinary growth of coca cultivation and cocaine production over the past three years, including record cultivation during the last 12 months."

The memo added that the U.S. still sees Colombia as a country that respects the commitments to the war on drugs, but adds that Trump did not discard the option to designate the country as failing to adhere to its obligations and expects Colombia "to make significant progress in reducing coca cultivation and production of cocaine."

The Colombian foreign minister María Ángela Holguín said that she would speak with President Juan Manuel Santos and the Defense Minister to analyze an official answer to Trump's comments.
