COLOMBIA: OAS Celebrates Ceasefire Between Government And ELN

09/04/2017 - 22:20:00 (RTTNews)

(RTTNews) - The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, celebrated the announcement of the ceasefire agreement between the Colombian government and the National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrilla group.

According to Almagro, the deal is "a clear sign of the goodwill of the parties and a significant step forward towards the longed peace in Colombia."

In a statement, Almagro encouraged the parties to move quickly in a dialogue aimed to "generate greater confidence in the process and fundamentally to contribute to ending the severe effects and violation of human rights that today different communities continue to suffer because of armed violence in the country."

Almagro recalled that the OAS' Mission to Support the Peace Process in Colombia had been actively accompanying various initiatives by civil society to promote humanitarian action. He also reiterated the OAS permanent desire and commitment to continue supporting peace talks.
