COLOMBIA: Duque Urges Hurry For Agreement On JEP

06/26/2018 - 14:43:00 (RTTNews)

(RTTNews) - The elected president of Colombia, Ivan Duque, showed his willingness to "seek an agreement" this week on the legislation that regulates the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP), currently under debate in the Senate.

"I hope that this week the national government can facilitate listening to some of the proposals that have been made in Congress and try to find an agreement so that the procedural rules meet those aspects," said Duque after meeting with Patricia Linares, JEP's chairwoman.

The Democratic Center, Duque's conservative party, is the main opponent of the rules of procedure of transitional justice, responsible for judging the crimes committed in the context of the armed conflict and the backbone of the peace agreement signed between the government of Juan Manuel Santos and the Revolutionary Colombian Armed Forces (FARC) former guerrilla group.

The JEP has been the center of a controversy in recent weeks for having got stuck in the Colombian legislative bodies at the request of some senators of the Democratic Center, who seek to reform some aspects of the jurisdiction.
