COLOMBIA: Conservative Ivan Duque Wins Presidential Elections

06/18/2018 - 13:18:00 (RTTNews)

(RTTNews) - The lawyer Ivan Duque, candidate of the conservative Democratic Center party, was elected president of Colombia for the period 2018-22 with a speech of firmness against all forms of illegality and the promise to "change" the peace agreement with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) that convinced more than 10 million voters.

Duque, 41, won Sunday's second round with an unprecedented 10,369,210 votes, equivalent to 53.98%, according to official data, after 99.92% of the votes counted. His contender, the leftist Gustavo Petro, also achieved a record voting for the left in the country, reaching 8,031,249 votes, or 41.81%.

The blank vote, which in recent weeks gained prominence as an alternative for voters in the center, was below what had been projected by the polls and was the option chosen by 808,141 voters (4.20%). President Juan Manuel Santos, as he had promised, called Duque an hour after his triumph was confirmed and offered him "all the collaboration of the government to make an orderly and quiet transition."

As of August 7, Duque should rule Colombia and the country will have a woman as vice president for the first time: Marta Lucia Ramirez.

Petro acknowledged Duque's winning via Twitter, but made it clear that it was not a defeat, for the more than eight million votes he received and hinted that his presidential dream is still alive when he said: "For now we will not be government."

The participation rate reached 53.02%, slightly lower than the 53.38% of the first round held on May 27.

Duque received 2.8 million more votes in the second round than in the first round, while Petro expanded his voting by almost 3.2 million compared to the vote three weeks ago.
