COLOMBIA: Former Candidate Fajardo Calls Blank Vote On Sunday

06/16/2018 - 08:33:00 (RTTNews)

(RTTNews) - Sergio Fajardo, the Colombian presidential candidate who was in third place in the first round of the elections on May 27, confirmed that he wuld vote blank in the second round of the presidential elections, to be held on Sunday.

"The blank vote will allow us to keep an independent, respectful and constructive approach to the government that comes in," Fajardo said in a letter published in his social networks.

Fajardo, who came to the elections for the Coalition Colombia, believes that neither the conservative Ivan Duque nor the leftist Gustavo Petro "has shown a way to a peace that allows uniting" the country.

The former candidate, who was also mayor of Medellin (2004-2007) and governor of the department of Antioquia (2012-2015), also reflected on the attacks he has received on social networks by voting blank, which according to his detractors represents a ballot "against peace" and "for war."

Fajardo also lamented that after the peace agreement signed with the guerrilla of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in November 2016, which he considered "would serve to have a common project of collective construction in Colombia," the country ended up divided.

The former candidate also said that the greatest political challenge of the next president, who will take office on August 7, should be to give a new direction to the peace process with the FARC, "that falters with all the deficiencies and accumulated errors."
