BRAZIL: Supreme Court To Rule Thursday On Lula's Habeas Corpus Request

03/21/2018 - 20:02:00 (RTTNews)

(RTTNews) - The Brazilian Supreme Court will decide on the habeas corpus filed by former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's lawyers on Thursday. Lula's defense aims to keep the politician away from jail until there is no more room for appeal.

The Supreme Court decision would bring back discussions about whether it is constitutional to arrest defendants after a conviction in intermediate courts, as is the case of Lula. He was sentenced to 12 years and a month in prison by a Federal Court (TRF-4) for corruption and money laundering.

Lula will have the last opportunity to question the TRF-4 decision next Monday. If the court denies his appeal, Lula could be arrested on the same day.
