BRAZIL: Prosecutors Decry Supreme Court Judge For Close Ties With Suspect

08/30/2017 - 13:25:00 (RTTNews)

(RTTNews) - Public prosecutors in Brazil are trying to prove that a Brazilian Supreme Court judge has close ties with a businessman whom he freed twice recently. The last piece of evidence on that matter is an email showing that the businessman bought flowers to the Justice in 2015.

In July, Jacob Barata Filho - who owns stakes in transport companies in Rio de Janeiro state - was arrested after investigations showed that he was one of the operators of a R$ 260 million corruption scheme that involved graft payments to public authorities.

The Supreme Court Justice Gilmar Mendes published two decisions to release Barata Filho from jail - the first on August 17th and the second on the following day.

The Brazilian Attorney General, Rodrigo Janot, asked the Supreme Court chairwoman, Cármen Lúcia, to remove Mendes from the case due to the close relations he maintained with Barata Filho.

According to Janot, in 2013 Mendes was the best man at the wedding of the businessman's daughter with a nephew of Guiomar Mendes, the Justice's wife.

The attorney general also pointed out that Barata Filho has a close relationship with Francisco Feitosa, Gilmar Mendes' brother-in-law, and that the businessman is a client of the law firm in which Guiomar Mendes works.

The last piece of evidence of the close relations between Mendes and Barata Filho was presented yesterday by public prosecutors: after analyzing the businessman emails, they found out that Barata Filho sent flowers to Gilmar Mendes on November 23, 2015.

Mendes so far has denied a personal relationship with the businessman.
