BRAZIL: Lula Promises Referendum To Repeal Economic Reforms If Elected

11/29/2017 - 17:57:00 (RTTNews)

(RTTNews) - Former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (2003-2010) said that he would call a referendum to repeal the reforms adopted under Michel Temer's administration if elected to the presidency next year.

"If I go back, I will approve a recall referendum to change a lot that is there," he said during an interview with Mato Grosso do Sul's Capital radio. "I'm going to make a recall referendum to change a lot of romps that were made in this country in the period of the coup."

Lula also noted that, in the Brazilian political system, it is impossible for a single party to rule without forming a broad coalition, unless the winner party wins the most of the chairs in both Congress' houses and also in all Brazilian states.

"I was elected in 2002, and my party's bench was 91 out of 513 representatives in the House. I had nine senators out of 81 in the Senate. To vote something it would be necessary at least 43 [senators]," said the former president.

Lula added that the political class that governs Brazil today is a result of the population's political thinking in the last elections in 2014.

"If the people voted with hatred, they have harvested what they sowed. We have to discuss what we want, what we want for the future of Brazil," he added.

Less than a year before the vote, the former center-left President leads the main polls, followed by the far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro.
