BRAZIL: Economists Raise 2017 Inflation Forecast To 3.33%

07/24/2017 - 17:15:00 (RTTNews)

(RTTNews) - The median forecast for Brazil's consumer price inflation in 2017 rose to 3.33%, from 3.29% last week, after seven cuts in a row, according to economists surveyed by the central bank.

For 2018, the median forecast remained at 4.20% for the second week, after six consecutive cuts. For the next 12 months, inflation estimates were raised to 4.40%, from 4.37% last week.

Brazil's annual inflation is currently below the central bank's target of 4.5%. The most recent data shows that in June the annual inflation slowed to 3.00%, from 3.60% in May. It was the lowest inflation rate for the 12-month period since April 2007.

However, last week the Brazilian government announced a twofold increase in fuel taxes in an attempt to raise revenues and avoid missing this year's fiscal target - a primary deficit of R$ 139 billion -, a decision that increases inflationary pressure and could push the inflation rate closer to 4.5%.
