BRAZIL: Economic Agenda Halted Until Election - House Deputy Speaker

04/19/2018 - 20:57:00 (RTTNews)

(RTTNews) - Proposals included in the Brazilian government's economic agenda, including those related to the privatization of state-owned power company Eletrobras, would unlikely have enough votes to be approved before October's elections, said the deputy speaker of the government in the House of Representatives, Beto Mansur (MDB-SP), in an exclusive interview with Agencia CMA.

"In the post-election period, as of October, we should have the House voting what is necessary to vote to adjust the accounts of Brazil, Eletrobras, pension reform and other things," said Mansur.

"But now it would be very difficult to vote, especially when we talk about privatization. There are a lot of people who do not vote because of the election. We are in a period of 'electoral swindle' ... After the election, whoever won should vote or, if to vote, should be composed with the next government, which may be Michel (someone from the current government) or from another party, but in favor of the reforms that are still needed in this government so that there should be no future burnout," he added.

Mansur claims to be in favor of privatizations.

"I'm a guy who advocates for pension reform. I'm in a way already labeled. The guy who's going to vote for me already knows what I think. But there are people who depend on rural people or the unionist's vote. That is the problem that we are facing," he said.

Although Mansur states the hurdles to gather support to move ahead with the economic agenda, he affirms that the Congress would overturn any new motion to bring President Michel Temer before justice due to criminal complaints.

"The lawmakers are linked to the government but no longer want to vote on certain issues that may be unpopular," he noted.

On the tax reform bill, which Finance Minister Eduardo Guardia said should be approved in the first half of 2018, Mansur said he sees no problem in that "as long as it has no impact on these issues (involving public opinion). If there is some impact, for example involving public servants, etc., I find it very difficult."

Regarding his party's behavior for the Presidential election, Mansur said that the MDB still has to define who should be at the plate.
