BRAZIL: DI Rates Open Mixed Tuesday Amid Caution, Rising USD

07/31/2018 - 14:46:00 (RTTNews)

(RTTNews) - The one-day interbank deposit futures rates (DI rates) in Brazil opened mixed Tuesday. The rates fall at the short end amid expectation on the monetary policy decision in Brazil, while rising at the long end in response to the locally traded U.S. dollar's advance amid caution by investors before the announcement of the monetary policy decision by the United States Federal Reserve.

According to economists at the Renascen?a Corretora, the market expects the Federal Reserve to signal tomorrow if interest rates in the U.S. should hike in September. Until then, investors digest the monetary policy decision by the central bank of Japan, which decided to raise the limit of the interest rates projected by the country's 10-year bonds from 0.10% to 0.20%.

In the domestic market, the expectation is related to the decision of the Central Bank's Monetary Policy Committee, which will also come on Wednesday.

"The market does not expect news from Copom, and the market already knows that any move other than what we have seen must be made after the elections at the October meeting," said a Capital Markets' trader.

Near the middle of the session, the January 2019 DI contract rate was at 6.610%, from 6.625% in the previous settlement, while the January 2020 DI rate was at 7.88%, from 7.91%. The January 2021 DI contract rate was stable at 8.88%.
