BRAZIL: Even Arrested, Lula Leads Voting Intention Poll

04/16/2018 - 13:30:00 (RTTNews)

(RTTNews) - Former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva leads the Datafolha voting intention poll even after his arrest earlier this month, in all scenarios in which the research institute included his name.

In one of these scenarios, center-left Lula appears with 31%, a lower percentage when compared to the 37% level in the previous survey, in January - when he had already been convicted for corruption by a higher court, but was not in jail.

Lula is trailed by the far right-winger representative Jair Bolsonaro (PSL-RJ), with an average of 15% of the votes in the scenarios with Lula. Bolsonaro leads the polls that remove Lula from the candidate list, with an average of 17%. In some scenarios, however, he is technically tied in the lead with Marina Silva (Rede), whose voting intentions range between 10% and 15%.

The voting intention in former S?o Paulo state governor Geraldo Alckmin (PSDB) ranges from 6% to 7% in the scenarios with and without Lula. Alckmin is behind, although technically tied with, the former Justice Joaquim Barbosa (PSB) - who has not yet decided to be a pre-candidate - with a 9% average.

The leftist Ciro Gomes has 5% in the scenario with Lula but reaches 9% in the scenario without the Workers' Party leader.

Disputing Lula's legacy in his likely absence, Guilherme Boulos, leader of the Homeless' Workers Movement and PSOL's pre-candidate, did not score, the Communist Party's former representative Manuela D'Avila had between 2% and 3% of the votes, and the former mayor of Sao Paulo, Fernando Haddad, appears with 2% of the voting intention.
