BRAZIL: Airlines Complain That New Labor Rules Increase Costs

07/16/2017 - 21:28:00 (RTTNews)

(RTTNews) - The new labor rules for pilots and flight commissioners will cost around R$ 200 million per year to airlines and may result in higher air ticket prices, said the National Syndicate of Airline Companies (SNEA) and the Brazilian Association of Airline Companies (Abear).

The new rules change the way that air travel companies manage their employees working hours by forcing them to adopt a fatigue risk management system and increasing the number of days off for employees.

Companies stated that Brazil has one of the safest flight records in the world and that they discussed current rules to avoid security issues with regulators and unions. According to the firms, the new regulations interfere with labor issues that should be addressed in conversations between companies and employees.

Air travel companies also complained about a new fiscal rule that could increase their payroll taxes by R$ 464 million per year and said that rising costs could be compensated by a bill that sets a 12% ceiling for a tax on aviation fuel.
