ARGENTINA: Country Sends First Shipment Of Lemons To U.S. In 17 Years

04/19/2018 - 18:51:00 (RTTNews)

(RTTNews) - After 17 years, the first shipment of fresh Argentinean lemons to the United States was dispatched yesterday after a ceremony hosted led by President Mauricio Macri in Tucumin.

After intense negotiations, the United States Department of Agriculture definitively authorized, at the end of 2017, the entry of Argentinean lemons into its territory.

Around ten packing plants in the country should be able to export between 15,000 and 20,000 tons per year of lemons to the U.S. market.

Last year, Argentina's fresh lemon exports reached US$ 246 million and a volume of 238 thousand tons, with an average price of US$ 1,033 per ton.

Argentina annually produces 3.28 million tons of citric fruits, exporting around 395 thousand.

Both Mexico and Brazil are open to the export of Argentinean lemons and, for this year, commercial missions are planned to different strategic destinations, such as Russia and the United Kingdom.
